Abstract:

Purpose: This paper is to offer the comprehensive review of the interdisciplinary state of knowledge regarding anti-corruption policies, with a particular focus on reducing corruption among civil servants. Design/methodology/approach: Drawing on the work of economists, political scientists, sociologists, and anthropologists, we conclude possible precautionary measures against corruption in public administration or bureaucracy. Findings: We find growing evidence of the effectiveness of policies based on monitoring, including top-down and bottom-up strategies and e-governance. In addition, these measures seem to be a necessary to make changes in restructuring bureaucracies, and screening and recruiting mechanisms in order to effectively deal with corruption cases happening in bureaucracy. Originality: This study contributes to understanding the effectiveness of traditional corruption reduction strategies pursued by governments.
