Esbâb’ı Nüzûl İslam’ın ilk devrinden itibaren Kur’ân İlimleri içerisinde etkili bir yere sahip olmuş, varlığı ile İslam dünyasına ilahi murada matuf anlayış/kavrayış biçimlerinin geliştirilmesine katkıda bulunmuştur. Sahabeyi de üstün kılan vasıflardan birisi de nüzûl ortamına, zamanına, âyetlerin kimin hakkında indiğine vb sebebi nüzûle ilişkin hususların bilinmesindeki yetkinliğidir. Onların bütün bu hususlara vâkıf olması aynı zamanda ilâhi maksada da hâiz olmalarını sağlamıştır. Ebu Ubâde’nin İbrahim Teymi’den naklettiği, aynı dine, aynı kıbleye sahip olan ümmetin ihtilafa düşmesi hususundaki rivâyeti esbâb’ı nüzulün önemini bir kez daha ortaya çıkarmıştır. Biz bu makalemizde çağdaş dönem yazarlarında biri olan, hayatını İslam davası uğruna mücadelelerle geçiren Mevdûdî’nin Tefhîmu’l Kur’ân adlı eserine esbâb’ı nüzûl konusunu ele aldık. Mevdûdî’nin sebeb-i nüzûle bakış açısını, yöntemini inceleyip ilgili rivayetler hususundaki değerlendirmelerine değindik. Ayrıca klâsik dönemlerde tartışma konusu olan belli başlı meselelerde müfessirin yaklaşım tarzlarını ele aldık. Bu sayede müfessirler içerisinde Mevdûdî’nin yeri ve önemi hakkında okuyucuyu bilgilendirmeye çalıştık.
