Ticaret hayatın büyük bir gerçeğidir. Bu gerçeklik, kapsayıcı maddî ve manevî bir genişlik ve derinliğe sahiptir. Sanat bireyin olduğu kadar toplumun ve tarihin de bir meyvesidir. Toplumu ve toplumun şekillendiği tarihi süreci besleyen unsurlar din, kültür, medeniyet ve çağ değişimleridir. Klasik edebiyat kendi sanat anlayışı çerçevesinde anılan kaynaklardan beslenmiştir. Ticarete ait değerler/kavramlar şairler tarafından zaman zaman etraflarında yeni hayal ve imajların kurulduğu bir kaynak olarak önemli bir araştırma sahasıdır. Başlangıçta herhangi bir tüccar anlamını taşıyan; ancak değişen siyasî, sosyal ve ekonomik gelişmelerle siyasî ve idarî kimi hakları da bünyesine alan şehbender/şehbenderlik klasik şiirin kendisinden istifade ettiği ticaretle ilgili kavramlardan biridir. Şehbender çerçevesinde oluşturulmuş pek çok hayal ve imaj klasik şiirin estetik söyleminin kaynak malzemesi olmuştur. Şehbenderle ilgili bu estetik söylem aynı zaman da şehbenderin sıradan bir tüccardan hukukî, idari kimi hakları bünyesinde barındıran bir mevkie dönüşümünün de tanıklığını barındırmaktadır. Şiir, anılan bu anlam dünyasından estetik zeminde istifade etmiştir. Bu çerçevede şehbender etrafında oluşturulmuş hayal ve teşbih unsurlarını, hüsn-i ta’lil vb. edebî sanatları, poetik ve tasavvufî söylemleri, sosyal eleştiri ve patronaj ifadelerini, övgü değerlerini ve nihayetinde bir kurumun kendisini (şehbenderlik) bulmak mümkündür. Bu söylem -birinci gayesi estetik olmakla beraber- bir medeniyetin ticaret algısını ve bu algının çağa göreliliğini de bize ulaştırmaktadır.
Trade is a big truth of life. This reality has a comprehensive material and spiritual width and depth. Art is a fruit of society and history as well as individual. The elements that feed the historical process in which society and society are shaped are the changes of religion, culture, civilization and age. Classical literature is fed from the sources mentioned in the framework of its art understanding. The values of trade are an important field of research as a source of new fantasies and images created by poets from time to time around them. In the beginning, any trader has a meaning; but with changing political, social and economic developments, political and administrative rights are also incorporated into the concept of trade that the classical poem itself is based on. Many fantasies and images created in the framework of the city have become the source of the aesthetic narrative of classical poetry. This aesthetic statement concerning the city also contains the witness of the city’s transformation from a regular trader to a legal and administrative position within its rights. Poetry is a poem of the world that has become a poem of the world. In this framework, the imagination and encouragement elements created around the citybender, Hüsn-i ta'lil, etc. It is possible to find literary arts, poetic and tasavouffic speeches, social criticism and patronage expressions, praise values and eventually the institution itself (shahbenderity). This statement – with its first purpose being aesthetic – also brings us the perception of a civilization’s trade and the proportionality of this perception to the age.
