Abstract:

Most of the texts of the Anatolian dialects have been collected and published. It is understood that these collected texts have been studied in terms of sound and form. Studying the dialects fields that show the regional differences of the Turkey-Turkish in the terms verbal mood will contribute a lot of benefits to the research of the Turkish language. Studies done in the dialects of Turkey - Turkish, except the subjects of sound and form are extremely few. This study is about the different usages of the modal affixes in the dialects of Rize and its surroundings. That the usage of the modal affixes, especially simple present tense mood (modals) seen in the region dialect is used instead of other modals will beintroduced with the examples of texts of the regional dialect. In this study, the scanned examples of texts in the books of The Dialects of Rize Province (by Turgut Günay) and The Texts of Northeast Dialects (by Ahmet Caferoğlu) have been used. Rize dialect is discussed with Turkey Turkish dialects, Trabzon and Hopa of Artvin, Borçka and Arhavi, within the Northeast Group Dialects. Ahmet Caferoğlu, Tooru Hayashi, Zeynep Korkmaz and Turgut Günay made various classifications regarding regional dialects. These classifications show that in comparison with the standard Turkey-Turkish and Anatolian dialects; Rize and surroundings, where Oghuz and Kipchak elements live with the groups speaking various languages and dialects, differs in terms of its phonetics, morphology and syntax. Similar situation is also observed in terms of modal suffixes. In the introduction chapter to this study, history of the Turkish language in and surroundings of Rize has been given in short and the place of the Rize dialect among the other Turkey-Turkish dialects detected. By means of the scientific studies concerning the region, the problem of ‘Reassignment of the Time Indicating Modals in Rize Dialect’ was examined.
