Abstract:

Having started with Tulip Age, Westernisation movements take a planned form with edict of Gulhane. In that age, when social and cultural developments are lived quite fast, daily life units of West go into the social life effectively. The late modernism has a share on the fast and repeated remodelling of social life. The type of novel which prepares the birth conditions of Enlightenment in Europe springs in Turkish literature towards the end of Westernisation movements. Westernisation phenomenon was handled as a problem over the European snob types in the first samples of novel and it was stressed that Westernisation was only lived in only appearance. European snob type is known with admiration, apery and simple wannabe towards foreign. In this study, a reading based on over-westernisation about “european snobbery” has been carried out, and the causes directing their behaviours and thoughts and the conditions emerging those two European snobs who were in the pursuit of foreign desires were determined. The main aim of the study is to realize social tensions hidden behind a society which carries the desire of over westernisation instead of being a Westerner or staying Easterner. Being a product of a period when social breakages were lived, european snob type has been made a subject to criticism in an ironic expression in “Araba Sevdası” and contradiction of a new intellectual type who will be taken as an example in the novel of Felatun Beyle Rakım Efendi”. The daily life units of protagonists in these novels reflect their viewpoints towards modernism. Moreover, the selected means concerning daily life gives information about both of their intelligence level of acquiring Westernisation.
