In her recently published book D. Reitzenstein (fn. 2) follows the communis opinio and understands the terms lykiarcheia bzw. lykiarches as meaning only the incumbent or former archiereus. By contrast, the author of this present article holds the view, which he had already expressed in a previous paper (see fn. 4), that the lykiarcheia commenced as early as with the taking over of the federal grammateia and continued beyond the archiereia. Direct candidature for the archiereia was not possible. This interpretation has consequences also for the dating of the individual archiereis' terms of office.
