Rogers, 1970’Iİ yıllarda empatiyi; bir kişinin kendisini karşısındaki kişinin yerine koyarak olaylara onun bakış açısıyla bakması, o kişinin duygu ve düşüncelerinin doğru olarak anlaması, hissetmesi ve bu durumu ona iletmesi süreci olarak tanımlamıştır. Rogers’a göre, hem bireysel hem de grupla psikolojik danışma sürecinde, danışanın kendini keşfetmesi, tanıması ve olumlu yönde değişmesi için gerekli koşulların başında empati gelmektedir. Rogers’ın empati konusunda üzerinde durduğu önemli nokta “taklit” değil, “yer değişimi” dir. Birey bir başkasının davranışlarını tam olarak yapamaz, sadece onun duygu, düşünce ve davranışlarını, kendini onun yerine koyarak anlamaya çalışır ve anladığımda karşısındakine yansıtır
