In this study, messages used by mothers of children 4-6 year to warn and to fix children's misbehaviors were examined. In addition, whether the quality of these messages varied according to empathic tendency, communication skill and education level of the mothers were investigated. A total of 253 mothers whose children attending to 12 different preschool education foundations placed in central towns of Konya participated in the study. Five problems which could be encountered, concerning with misbehaviors of children, were presented to mothers. For each problem, open-ended questions like âwhat kind of expression do you use when you meet this type of problemâ to fix this misbehavior were asked to the mothers. Obtained answers from the questions were subjected to content analysis from the point view of solution messages, put-down messages, indirect messages and I-messages. In addition, Korkut (1996)`s Communication Skills Assessment Scale and Dökmen (1988)`s Empathic Tendency Scale were applied to the mothers participating in the study. At the end of study, it was seen that mothers used solution messages which was one of you-messages in higher rate and I-messages in lower rate when five misbehaviors were based on. While the messages used by mothers against five misbehaviors varied according to communication skills and education level of mothers in some behaviors, the messages did not vary in respect to empathic tendency of the mothers.
