It is highly important to provide sustainable work conditions for seafarers in maritime sector and it is thought one of the biggest barriers in this issue is “burnout”. The purpose of this study is to investigate burnout and to define the proffessional factors affecting burnout syndrome on masters and officers serving in managerial level on board ships. For this purpose, measurements were performed using Maslach Burnout Inventory and personal information and evaluation form. According to results it was concluded that when the level of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization of masters and officers is “normal”, “personal accomplishment” is at the least level. Also the highest score of burnout feeling is seen in 25-29 year-olds, and 1-5 year sea experienced seafarers. When the most important reasons are to stay away from the families and lonelines, lonelines and stress are expressed as most demanding individual elements. Also the most frustrating and most unlovable elements affecting burnout was found as paperwork required for the safety management system and ship and port security practices, and having to deal with the other seafarers problems. It is also seen that the demographic specifications of seafarers are not so important a factor in experiencing burnout.
