Abstract:

Families with a mental disability child may experience many psycho-social and socio-economic-oriented problems. Having a different child than expected, family addiction, unacceptance of the child, guilt, lifelong care and economic concerns can cause a variety of problems in these families.   This research has been carried out in our country to determine the problems that mothers with mental disabilities experience when raising their disabled children. The research has been used as a “search model”. The data was collected from a total of 2688 mothers serving from a total of 271 private rehabilitation centers serving under the supervision of the Social Services and Child Care Agency (SHÇEK) in our country. The study found that the majority of mothers were married (95.2 per cent), primary school graduates (53.3 per cent), 30-49 years old (69.9 per cent), the child had problems during pregnancy as a cause of disability (14.7 per cent), their children did not accept the disability (61.8 per cent), their children did not feel guilty when they were disabled (65.2 per cent), their children had psychological trouble when they cared for their disabled children (78.8 per cent), they shared these problems with many spouses (35.8 per cent), the family's average income varied from 0 to 300 million per cent (37.5 per cent) and the child had economic difficulties in meeting their expenses (52.5 per cent).   The study found that while raising a mental disabled child, mothers experienced more psychological and economic-oriented problems. To solve these problems that families experience, social services and social assistance-oriented services models need to be actively implemented.
