Abstract:

Suicidal behavior, has been discernible amongst the majority of the globe all round the mankind history, has economic, cultural and societal guises. Suicide refers to detiberate self-yiolent deeds and the victim's eventual goal is to end her/his life, albeit several scientific approaches vary to delineate. The influence of social, cultural and economic agents triggers off suicidal conduct that later prolonged by psychological agents, can lead to demişe of the victim. Hence the suicide quandary is subject to a multidisciplinary approach. On account of an invitation by the governorship of Batman Province to probe the raising figures of suicide incidents m Batman and wide coverage of the news related the suicide incidents in Batman ali över the natıonal media sources during 2000, 4 research staff from the Institute of Family Research cpnductedan assessment inquiry and visited concerned publiç authorities. Furthermore, the official evıdence data about reported suicide and suicide a ttempts occurred during 01.01.1995 and 12.10.2000 from the poliçe archives of Batman, the records of the Command ofProvincial Gendarme and other administrative sources outside the municipal hub of Batman was collected using a structured information form. The total number of reported people committing suicide and attempting suicide is 191 in the period ofroughly 6 years. Some outlined findings are as follows: - Suicide and suicide attempts are increasing by years. - An overwhelming majority of the sexes reported in the documents was female (75%). - The victims were mostly young, majority among 14-30 years. -15.8% of the women committed suicide had a religious marriage and 8% had lived together with a second wife at home. - The woman suicide incidents occurred widely during summer time. - The mostly happening hours round the day were in the course of 12pm-18pm. - The women committed or attempted suicides were mostly illiterate. - The mostly preferred suicide methods were hanging and firearms. - The majority of subjects were from rural areas and low socioeconomic level. - Despite the lack of reliable data about the significant cause to lead suicide in the reported documents, psychological and family related disputes were reported for underlying causes frequently. Based on the official records, this study lacks in descriptive and analytical power due to unreliable and invalid records. Therefore, it is necessary to handle the problem with psychological, psyciatric, sociological and anthropological sides and to make detailed investigations.
