COVID-19 Salgın Sürecinde Sosyal Medyada Yaşlılara Yönelik Ayrımcılık: Twitter Örneği

Sosyal medya, günümüzde çeşitli gündemlerin oluşturulduğu, paylaşımların bulunulduğu ve tüm bunlara yönelik yorumların yapıldığı bir platformdur. Bu platformlardan biri de Twitter’dır. Twitter’da, COVID-19 sürecinde yaşlılara yönelik yaşa dayalı ayrımcı tutumlarla ilişkili çeşitli paylaşımlarda bulunulduğu görülmüştür. Yapılan ayrımcı paylaşımların nedeninin ise salgın döneminde 65 yaş ve üzeri yaş grubunun riskli grupta olması sebebiyle kronolojik yaşa dayalı olarak sokağa çıkma kısıtlamaların yapılmasına rağmen bazı paylaşımcılar tarafından bu kısıtlamaların sorumlusunun yaşlılar olarak görülmesinden kaynaklandığı düşünülmektedir. Buna göre söz konusu çalışma, Twitter’da yaşlılara yönelik yapılan paylaşımlarda yaşa dayalı ayrımcı tutumları, söylemleri ve betimlemeleri tespit etmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmada bir nitel araştırma tekniği olan içerik analizi tekniği kullanılarak yaşlılara yönelik yaşa dayalı ayrımcılığın nasıl, hangi gerekçelerle gerçekleştirildiği ele alınmaya çalışılmıştır. Buna göre, yapılan paylaşımlarda yaşlılığa yönelik yaşa dayalı ayrımcılık unsurları bir araya getirilerek kodlanmış ve belirli temalar altında ele alınmıştır. Yaşlı bireylerin ‘dede ve nine’ olarak tanımlanması, yaşlı bireylere yönelik ‘alay etme, küçümseme ve aşağılama’ söylemleri, yaşlı bireylere yönelik ‘hakaret, şikâyet, tehdit ve nefret’ söylemleri, yaşlı bireylere yönelik ‘yalnızlık’ söylemleri, yaşlı bireylere yönelik ‘fiziksel şiddet’ söylemleri şeklindeki temalar çerçevesinde çalışmanın bulguları sunularak yorumlanmıştır. Çalışma sonucunda yaşlıların Twitter’da yapılan paylaşımlarla alay etme, küçümsenme, aşağılanma, hakaret etme ve nefret söylemleri gibi yaşa dayalı ayrımcı tutum, söylem ve betimlemelerle karşılaştıkları görülmüştür.

Social media is a platform today where various agendas are created, sharing and commenting on all of these. One of these platforms is Twitter. On Twitter, COVID-19 has seen various posts related to age-based discriminatory attitudes towards the elderly. The reason for the discriminatory sharing is that the age group of 65 years and over is in the risk group during the epidemic period, although restrictions are made on the basis of chronological age, some shareholders are believed to be due to the fact that the responsible for these restrictions are considered the elderly. Accordingly, the study aims to identify age-based discriminatory attitudes, speeches and imagery in Twitter-based posts to the elderly. In the study, the use of content analysis technique, which is a quality research technique, has been attempted to address how age-based discrimination towards elderly people, with what reasons it is carried out. According to this, in the shared posts, age-based discrimination elements were combined and coded and discussed under specific topics. The definition of the elderly individuals as 'fathers and nine' was interpreted by presenting the findings of the work in the framework of the subjects in the form of the words of 'insulting, deceiving and humiliating' to the elderly individuals, the words of 'hate, complaint, threat and hatred' to the elderly individuals, the words of 'solitude' to the elderly individuals, and the words of 'physical violence' to the elderly individuals. The study found that elderly people met age-based discriminatory attitudes, speeches and imagery, such as laughing, deceiving, insulting, insulting and hate speeches on Twitter.

The reason for the discriminatory shares is that the age group 65 years and older is in the risky group during the epidemic, so although there are restrictions on the basis of chronological age, it is thought that some sharers are responsible for these restrictions as the elderly. Accordingly, the study aims to identify age-based discriminatory attitudes, rhetoric and depictions in twitter posts for the elderly. The study focused on how and for what reasons age-based discrimination against the elderly were performed using the content analysis technique, which is a qualitative research technique. Accordingly, age-based discrimination elements for old age are brought together and encoded and discussed under certain themes. The definition of elderly individuals as 'grandparents', 'ridicule, contempt and humiliation' rhetoric towards elderly individuals, 'insults, complaints, threats and hate' rhetoric towards elderly individuals, 'loneliness' rhetoric towards older individuals, 'physical violence' rhetoric towards older individuals were interpreted by presenting the themes of the study. As a result of the study, it was observed that the elderly faced age-based discriminatory attitudes, rhetoric and depictions such as ridicule, contempt, humiliation, insulting and hate speech.
