Niğde ve çevresinde Neolitik dönemden itibaren yerleşim izlerine tesadüf edilmektedir. Niğde çevresi bulunduğu jeopolitik konumdan dolayı tarih boyunca çok sayıda medeniyete ev sahipliği yapmıştır. Günümüzde Altunhisar olarak bilinen yerleşim yeri ve çevresinin de benzer bir tarihi geçmişe sahip olduğu görülmektedir. Altunhisar çevresinde de eski medeniyetlerin kültürel izlerini görmek mümkündür.
Altunhisar çevresinin Malazgirt Zaferinin takiben 1080’li yıllarda Türk hâkimiyetine girdiği düşünülmektedir. Türk hâkimiyetinin gerçekleştiği sıralarda bölgenin en önemli yerleşim biriminin Anduğu olduğu görülmektedir. Selçuklular ve Beylikler döneminde Niğde şehrine tabi olan yerleşim birimlerinden biri olup dönemin kaynaklarında ismi zikredilmektedir. Aksarayî’nin 1323 yılında telif ettiği Müsameretü’l-Ahbar isimli eserde Anduğu vilayeti ile ilgili önemli kayıtlara tesadüf edilmekte olup Anduğu Vilayetinin Niğde kalelerinden biri olduğu belirtilmektedir. Vilayet ifadesinin kullanılması da önemli bir idari statüye sahip olduğunu göstermektedir.
Beylikler döneminde de Anduğu’nun önemli bir yerleşim birimidir. Cumhuriyetin ilanından sonra yapılan idari düzenlemede Bor kazasına Ortaköy olan ismi ile bağlı bir nahiye merkezidir. 1956’da ismi Altunhisar olarak değişmiştir. 1990 yılında Niğde’ye bağlı bir ilçe merkezi durumuna gelmiştir.
