Abstract:

This research was carried out to reveal the metaphors of high school students about the current problems in the world, "global warming", "climate change" and "greenhouse effect". The study group of the study consists of 423 students in the 9th and 11th grade levels that continue to study at a secondary education institution in Gaziantep in 2021-2022 academic year. The phenomenology pattern, one of the qualitative research techniques, was used in the study. In order to collect the data of the research, the students were asked, “For me, climate change is like…. Because;…” , “For me, the greenhouse effect is like…. Because…” and “For me, global warming is like…. Because…” were asked to complete the sentences. The data obtained from the study were interpreted by content analysis. Within the scope of the research, students developed 731 valid metaphors. As a result of the research, it was seen that the students produced 237 metaphors related to the concept of "climate change", 234 metaphors related to the concept of "greenhouse effect" and 260 metaphors related to the concept of "global warming". These generated metaphors are grouped under 5 different categories for “climate change”, 6 for “greenhouse effect” and 5 different categories for “global warming”. According to the findings, the most repeated metaphor for climate change is human; The most repeated metaphor for the greenhouse effect was determined as smoking and the most repeated metaphor for global warming was determined as fire.
