Yerli Çocuk Çizgi Filmlerinde İdeolojik Bir Söylem Olarak Yaşlılık: TRT Çocuk Örneği
2020

Abstract:

Ageing as an ideological saying in indigenous children's cartoons: TRT child example
2020
Author:
Abstract:

The elderly representative in the cartoons brings clues about the position of old age in the ideological and social power relationships. The aim of this study is to explore the forms of representation of the elderly in the indigenous children's cartoons on television, which have an important role in how an age perception is transmitted to young generations. The TRT Children's Channel was preferred because of the high tracking rate among the children's channels and the weight given to the local construction. In the context of the function of the elderly characters in the story and their position in social relationships, the cartoons named Musa and Cloud (a member of a wide group of families), Rafadan Tayfa (the elderly of the neighborhood) and Brother Ozi (the family member) were selected as examples. The old characters in these cartoons are analyzed by the method of qualitative content analysis in the framework of age theories. The traditional life is described in the Masa and Cloud cartoon that strengthens the emphasis of the new conservation on the tradition with the positive relationship that older characters have established with children; the 1980s in Rafadan Tayfa, through the relations that have turned from negative to positive, the old age is re-discovered in the neoliberal neighborhood life; the modern family life of today, the brother Ozi cartoon that characterizes the old character with the inadequate relationship that he has established with his surroundings, shows a mild structure between conservation and the neoliberal economy. In this context, despite being presented in the framework of different social organizations, the old representative and child-old relationship proposed in the indigenous cartoons is aligned with the statements that the new conservation in Turkey is producing in the cultural field.

Aging As An Ideological Discourse In Local Cartoons: The Example Of Trt Cocuk
2020
Author:
Abstract:

The representations of the elderly in cartoons provide a great opportunity to discuss the position of aging referring to ideology and power in social relations. This study aims to examine how the elderly individuals are represented in Turkish children’s cartoons on television. The research focusses on TRT Çocuk channel due to its high ratings among children’s channels and its emphasis on producing local narratives. In this regard, this research is limited to the analysis of three cartoons and their characters; Maysa ve Bulut (a member of a larger group than the family), Rafadan Tayfa (the elder of the neighborhood) and Kardeşim Ozi (a family member). Characters in these cartoons are analysed by a qualitative content analysis with reference to the theories in aging. Maysa ve Bulut emphasizes neo-conservatism through a traditional narrative highlighting positive relationship between elderly characters and the children. Rafadan Tayfa narrates the positive transformation and the rediscovery of aging in neo-liberal neighborhoods. Finally, Kardeşim Ozi portrays the hybrid experience of elderly individuals, who cannot develop adequate relationships with their surroundings and are stuck between neo-conservatism and neo-liberal economy. In this regard, the representation of the elderly and elderly-children relationships in cartoons coincide with the discourses produced by neo-conservatism in Turkey’s cultural arena, despite their different depictions.
