Yusef Komunyakaa is an African-American poet who has received many prizes for his contribution to War poetry. In eleven collections of poetry, he introduces a very unique and interesting jazz poetry that combines aesthetic ideals with moral ideals. His poetry addresses themes of war, love, and racism, with subject matter ranging from the portrayal of the experiences and suffering of Black southern men in Bogalusa to his experiences as a soldier in the Vietnam War. Komunyakaa tries to move outside these experiences in an attempt to be alienated from the limitations of self and identity. Overall, his voice does not signify himself but it represents a universal voice that addresses all human beings.
