Abstract:

Summary Edgar Allan Poe and H. P. Lovercraft have disappeared from the image of popular fictional writers as they became the subject of psychoanalytic and philosophical discussions. The original style of these two important literary figures when they paint a house, a mountain lake, an eye, a monster, or a city, opens a speculative uncertainty between living and alive. This problematic, speculative realism, and object-oriented ontology, which Sigmund Freud addressed in his work “Undependent” and Beyond the Principle of Haz, has been expressed in different forms in contemporary philosophies. While speculative realism is inspired by Quentin Meillassoux, the thinker is Graham Harman, who puts the foundation of object-oriented ontology. This article will come from Meillassoux’s concept of rupture to reveal how the gland-like structure of the human mind was depicted by Poe and Lovecraft, which will link this concept to what Freud said about the uncertainty, and will ultimately benefit from Harman’s Lovecraft interpretation. As the stories referred to in the article are “The Fall of the Usher Property,” “The Untouched Heart,” “Cthulhu’s Call” and “In the Mountains of Madness,” it will be claimed that Poe and Lovecraft have revealed something that can be called thought art in their literature, even in different forms. Accordingly, the touching membrane passes an indirect communication on surfaces similar to the living and unanimity, to produce uncertainty and speculative thought.
