The United States and the Soviet Union, which were allies against German aggression during World War II, were at odds over conflict of interest after the end of the war. The dispute between the two countries has caused tensions and initiated the so-called Cold War process. The first military conflict of this process was the Korean War, which began on June 25, 1950, when the two countries faced off indirectly. Through the United Nations, the United States has called on member states to help South Korea, which was attacked in this war. Turkey was the first country to respond positively to this call. Türk Barışseverler Cemiyeti, founded shortly before the outbreak of the Korean War, opposed the Democratic Party Government’s decision to send troops to Korea. Established to fight the nuclear arms race and wars, the Society distributed leaflets to protest the government’s decision and to raise awareness of war in society. Members of the society were arrested on charges of “disseminating declarations contrary to national interest”. The Society was closed on July 29, 1950. As a result of the trial, the founding members, especially The League’s President Behice Boran, decided on June 3, 1951 that “to pursue political intentions, to attempt to break our friendship with the United States, to break the public’s trust in the government, to undermine national strength” they were sentenced to one year and three months in prison on the grounds.
