In recent years, patient rights have become one of the significant concerns of medical ethics. The Declaration of Lisbon on the Rights of the Patient, adopted by the World Medical Assembly in 1981, was one of the first endeavors in Europe to promote patient rights. This declaration was then updated and amended in Bali, Indonesia in 1995 and in Santiago, Chili in 2005. Turkey has not been indifferent to the efforts and studies for the promotion of patient rights, and has adopted related laws and by-laws.This study provides an overview of the historical progress of patient rights in Turkey, and investigates into the level of knowledge of patient rights among patients presenting to a Turkish state hospital
