Abstract In this study, Mehmet Akif Ersoy's contributions to Turkish education was evaluated in the frame of his understanding of education, which was determined through the words he used to state his wievs on education such as "tarbiya", "tadeep" and "tahzeeb." By analysing the meanings these words carry, his principles of education were firstly determined, and then his educational activities were stated. Not only the importance he attributed to educate his children, the activities he took part in educating them, and his expectations from education, but also his efforts to maintain a teacher, student and parent relation and the basic principles he applied were stated. His contribution to Turkish education was determined by explaining the courses he gave in schools or institutions, the zeal he displayed to have the youth learn foreign languages, the sports he did, and his attempts he made to educate the folk through informal education. As a conclusion it was seen that although Mehmet Akif was not a person who determined basic principles for education, he is remembered as an educantionist who contributed to the education of Turkish people from seven to seventy.
