Abstract:

The article examines archaic words used in the lexicon of the Karabakh dialect of the Azerbaijani language. First, the formation, area, position and other issues of the Karabakh dialect are clarified. Today, the peculiarities of this dialect, as well as the intensity of archaic Turkic words, once again confirm the settlement of ancient Turkic tribes in the region. The Karabakh dialect belongs to the western group of Azerbaijani dialects due to its geographical position and specific language features. Apart from Karabakh dialect, this group also includes the Gazakh-Tovuz, Ganjabasar, Borchali and West Azerbaijani accentss. Karabakh accents cover a wide area and differ from each other in their position. Although most of these dialects have the characteristics of the western dialect the Jabrayil, Zangilan and Gubadli dialects are transitional in nature and have the characteristics of western and southern dialects. The lexicon of the Karabakh dialect consists of two parts - the general lexicon of the Azerbaijani literary language and the words of the local dialect. In literary language, the general lexicon is dominated by words of national character. Local dialect words are only unique to this region. Such words distinguish the Karabakh dialect from both literary language and other dialects. In addition, the dictionary of the dialect contains ancient Turkic words that are archaic in the modern Azerbaijani literary language, but used in this region. Archaic words are preserved in various ways with the original form and meaning or with the constant meaning, has been preserved in close to its original meaning as a result of changes in form and meaning. The object of the article is archaic ancient Turkic words used in the Karabakh dialect of the Azerbaijani language. The main purpose of the research is to select archaic words in the Karabakh dialect in comparison with the literary language and determine the area and quantity, ancient and modern phonetic structure, as well as their meaning in comparison with other dialects of the Azerbaijani language, to follow their historical development on the basis of ancient Turkic manyscripts, materials of modern Turkic languages and dialects.
