Bir yazı karakteri ya da İngilizce’deki tercümesiyle ‘Typeface (Yazıyüzü)’ insanlar gibidir. Her birinin ayrı bir kişiliği, kendine has özelliği ve de bağlı olduğu bir sınıf vardır. Yazı karakterleri bir kimlik oluşturmada da önemli bir unsurdur. Bir harfin nasıl şekillendiği her ne kadar bu iş ile ilgilenmeyenler için önemsiz gibi dursa da harfi oluşturan çizgilerin kalınlığı, kıvrımların kavisi, bitiş yerlerindeki çıkıntıların yapısı gibi ayrıntılar yazı karakterine belirgin bir özellik kazandırmada önemli detaylar verir. Bir şehir ise yine aynı şekilde kurulduğundan bu yana bir karaktere sahiptir. Şehrin nasıl oluştuğu, planı, içinden geçen nehirlerin kıvrımı ve hatta üzerine kurulduğu jeolojik yapı bu karakterin şekillenmesinde önemli ipuçları verir. Bu iki kavram yani şehir ve yazı karakteri kimlik kazanma açısından aynı özelliklere sahiptirler ve bu nedenledir ki bir şehir kendine ait bir yazı karakteri ile anılabilir. Bu çalışmada yazı karakterinin, şehir kültüründeki yeri, tarama modeli kapsamında alanyazın incelemesi olarak ele alınmıştır. Çalışmanın amacı, şehirlerin kimliklerinde var olan yazı karakterlerinin nasıl şekillendiğine değinerek, bu yazı karakterlerinin tipografideki yeri ve önemine dikkati çekmektir. Çalışmada, üç farklı ülkeden üç şehir ele alınmış ve ele alınan örnekler bu üç şehirle sınırlandırılmıştır.
It’s like people with a character or translation in English ‘Typeface’. Each has a distinct personality, its own characteristics and a class to which it is connected. Writing characters are also an important element in creating an identity. Although how a letter is shaped seems unimportant for those who are not interested in this work, details such as the thickness of the lines that make the letter, the curve of the curves, the structure of the outputs in the end places give important details in giving a clear character to the writing character. A city has a character since it was established again. How the city is formed, its plan, the curve of the rivers that pass through and even the geological structure on which it is built gives important clues to the formation of this character. These two concepts, the city and the script character, have the same characteristics in terms of identity, and therefore a city can be referred to by its own script character. In this study, the character of the writing, the place in the city culture, the scan model is considered as an area examination. The purpose of the study is to take into account the place and importance of these characters in the typography, by pointing to how the characters exist in the identities of cities are shaped. In the study, three cities from three different countries were addressed and the examples being addressed were limited to these three cities.
