With the rapidly growing population, industrialization and overuse/extraction of natural resources, carbon emissions have increased worldwide. Carbon emissions associated with the increase in the amount of harmful gases in the air, such as greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide, is one of the most important factors that cause global problems such as climate change and warming. In natural ecosystems, soil, water and forests play an important role in the storage of carbon, the core component of carbon dioxide. However,
Along with the rapidly increasing population, industrialisation and the excessive use/destruction of natural resources, carbon emissions have also increased all over the world. Associated with the increase in the amount of harmful gases; such as greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide, carbon emissions are one of the most important factors causing global problems such as climate change and warming. In natural ecosystems, soil, water and forests play an important role in carbon storage, which is the main component of CO2. However, especially in urbanised areas and enlarged cities, there are losses in terrestrial carbon depots due to land use/land cover changes. In this context, the changes in carbon storage potential between 1990 and 2017 were analysed in the whole city of Aydın and its districts, which have been subjected to intense urbanisation process and spatial changes in the landscape structure in recent years. As a result, it was found that the increase in the vegetation in the agricultural areas and natural/semi-natural areas in Aydın province and its districts between 1990 and 2017 had a greater impact on the carbon storage potential compared to the urbanisation process.
